Burgas
Burgas is a town in Eastern Bulgaria, center of the District of Burgas and of the municipality of Burgas. It is the largest town in Southeastern Bulgaria. During the summer the town is frequented by Bulgarian and foreign tourists. Burgas is a modern and beautiful town with contemporary and ancient architecture. Burgas has its own airport. It is the third one of significance and the third largest in the country after Sofia and Varna. The second largest sea garden in Bulgaria is situated on the seashore, again after Varna. Here is the largest port in the country. Sunny Beach - one of the most famous summer resorts in Bulgaria is only at half an hour travel from Burgas. In immediate proximity to it is vacation settlement Elenite. In the same direction is the old town of Nesebar. To the south from Burgas are the vacation settlements Primorsko, Kiten, Sozopol, Ropotamo and Ahtopol.
There are many museums, galleries, theatres and monuments of culture as well as the ethnographic and history museum and many others, which are worth seeing.
The history museum was founded in 1925 and today the archeological department is housed there with rich collection of finds from the time of the antique Black sea colonizers. Ceramic utensils, objects from the daily round, antique coins, jewelry, tools and models of the ancient settlements are exhibited.
The ethnographic museum contains interesting collection of traditional mummer's masks and the typical for the region costumes, folk objects and ritual attributes. A number of traditional Bulgarian fabrics and embroideries typical of the region are exhibited.
Natural scientific museum contains many exhibits telling about the geological particularities of the land and of the region, of the flora and fauna. Over 1200 exponents are exhibited , connected with insects and reptiles. More than 140 fish species, plants from Stradzha region and protected species are presented.
The sea garden in the town is splendid place and vies with the one in Varna. The residents and guests of the town can walk and have a rest in the wonderful nature and sea air.
The central beach is located exactly under the Sea garden. The Cathedral "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" is another landmark, which is interesting with its mural paintings and wooden altar.
Burgas has unique location. It is surrounded on the one side by the sea and on the other side by three lakes - Bugras, Atanasov and Madrensko. The Burgas lake is on the shore of Black sea, to the west from Burgas. It is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria. The Atanasov lake is located between airport Burgas and the town. The lake offers favourable conditions for fishing. Madrensko lake is located at 10 km to the south from Burgas.
